Roasted Poblano Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Hi friends! There’s nothing better than a good grilled cheese sandwich during chilly, fall months is there? Paired with a cup of soup you have the perfect weeknight meal! Well, we happen to think of Sara Lee® Artesano™ Brioche Bread as the Official Bread of Grilled Cheese! And to share our love of Sara Lee Bread, we have created an ULTIMATE GRILLED CHEESE recipe based on flavors that are well known to our Southwest roots here in sunny Phoenix, Arizona: poblano peppers and pepper jack cheese! Now that’ll make one flavor-filled grilled cheese we can really get behind.
Sara Lee Artesano Brioche Bread
We started our Southwest-flavored grilled cheese with our favorite Sara Lee Artesano Brioche Bread. With thick slices, rich flavor and soft texture, Artesano Brioche is made with real butter and sea salt and a touch of milk. Love all those REAL ingredients? Me too! That means no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavors or artificial colors. And a good slice of bread makes for one amazing grilled cheese sandwich!
Grilled Cheese Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need for one amazing grilled cheese!
- Sara Lee Artesano Brioche Bread
- Fresh poblano pepper
- Pepper jack cheese
- Cream cheese
- Butter
How to Make a Roasted Poblano Grilled Cheese Sandwich
First, you’re going to want to start by roasting your poblano pepper. Wash and dry the pepper, cut the top off and remove the stem and seeds. Cut the pepper length wise and place it cut side down on an oiled baking sheet. Pop the pepper under a broiler on high until the skin is black and the pepper has buckled, so that you know it’s good and soft. Then toss the roasted pepper in a paper bag and stick it in the fridge for a couple of minutes to steam and cool.
Once cooled, take the peppers out and peel away the charred skin, leaving tender and tasty pepper slices for your sandwich. Now you’re ready to grill! Take out two slices of your Sara Lee Artesano Brioche bread and butter one side of each slice. Place a slice of bread, buttered side down in a non-stick sauté pan on medium-low heat and spread the inside of the slice with your softened cream cheese. Top the cream cheese with enough pepper jack cheese to cover the bread, then add your roasted poblano pepper, top with more pepper jack cheese. Spread the inside of your second slice of bread with remaining cream cheese and top off your sandwich. Allow the first side to brown and the cheese to melt. Once ready, flip your sandwich over and grill that side until golden brown. Now your Roasted Poblano Grilled Cheese Sandwich is ready to eat! Cut that baby in half and dig in.
Don’t have poblano peppers?
Living in the Southwest, we have our share of peppers to choose from! If you don’t have poblano peppers at your local grocer, you can substitute with something like an Anaheim or Serrano Pepper, though they can be quite a bit spicier. I would NOT use a green bell pepper; the taste profile just isn’t the same. Another alternative is to substitute canned green chilies. In that case I would drain and dry the peppers a bit before adding a layer of the chilies to your grilled cheese (again, in between the cheese layers so that they’re held in place).
