DIY Brick Painted Candles

Hi there! It’s Amanda, I’m back this month from Let’s Fête with a classy little craft – these DIY Brick Painted Candles! This is a brilliant way to transform something ordinary into something display-worthy. Dare I say, even gift worthy! I bought these inexpensive glass pillar candles from the dollar store a while back, knowing I wanted to transform them. To be honest, I tried a couple things that just didn’t work, we’ve all been there, right?! But finally nailed it because I wanted to bring you something fairly foolproof. I think anyone can do this!

What you need:

• White, cylinder glass candles (great find at the dollar store, or even amazon)
• Oil paint pen (I used a Sharpie one here)
• 1/8 or 1/4 inch tape (my white version is 1/8 and green version is 1/4, similar to this)

You can find pattern inspiration anywhere. I just adore this faux brick fireplace in my house (hubby hates it though!) – it was there when we moved in, part of the semi-remodel the previous owners did. While faux might not be our thing, I do love the texture and the bright white just lightens the place up. This was my inspiration for the pattern on the candles. Unique, right?!

FIRST: Now, all you need to do is tape off your relief pattern and use your pen over it. For the brick pattern you do need to be a little careful. If you’re doing it right, brick tends to have straight lines, so try as best you can to do this. I find it’s easier on candles or vases that are a cylinder like these. As soon as you get any shape to the glass, the tape is much more difficult to work with.

Tape off the horizontal stripes first, and then move on to the vertical ones. Make sure you stagger them from row to row, like a brick wall would be.

SECOND: Once you have it all taped off, start filling it in with your paint pen. It might take a bit, but I found it a good activity to just zone out with. Just focus. You’ll get there. 😉 And you won’t have to wait after painting, love how quickly paint pens dry!

THIRD: After you’re done painting, you peel the tape off gently. I’ve found that the oil paint pens do the best job of not peeling off with the tape. But it will happen here and there, and when it does, just take your pen and touch it up. Just another reason to use a pen. Better control than a paint brush. Clean up any stray paint that might have gotten under the tape with a razor blade.

Now you should have fantastic looking DIY Brick Painted Candles – display in a cute vignette on a shelf, mantle, or even pair with some flowers for a fantastic little mother’s day or hostess gift! I can’t decide if I like the white on white, or the green on white better. But I do think the white one is an awesome interpretation of my fireplace!
