How to Reupholster a Chair with #MichaelsFabrics

Hi friends! Remember last weekend I shared that Michaels now carries fabric? Exciting day, right? The new pre-cut fabric line includes cotton, canvas, burlap, felt, faux fur, crushed velvet and tulle, and will be available in a variety of sizes from a half-yard to 2 yards. That is absolutely perfect for SO MANY crafts, DIYs and sewing projects.

So Michaels sent me a sampling of their fun new fabric line…

And I loved all of it! I have so many projects in mind, but I finally completed my first one and wanted to share it with you! So the zebra print? Fabulous, right? I was instantly drawn to it, and since it was on a sturdy canvas, I knew it was PERFECT for a reupholster job that have I have been meaning to do forever. And I really do mean, forever.

I’ve had this chair for YEARS. I bought it in all of it’s paint removed, chippy goodness and though I haven’t wanted to touch its shabby chicness of a finish, I have wanted to reupholster the chair! I have walked isles of fabric stores forever, but have never taken the plunge. Honestly, it could just be that I haven’t wanted to deal with the hassle of going to the fabric desk, how silly is that? But for someone like me, the pre-cut fabric at Michaels is a life-saver. Or I suppose a project-saver!

So I grabbed the fab zebra printed canvas, my trusty staple gun and some scissors and got to work!

What you’ll need:

• Michaels fabric
• Scissors
• Staple gun
• Staples (I used 8mm)
• Seat to be reupholstered

And the steps:

1. (Not shown) I did iron out the fabric a bit before starting the project, just to smooth the fold lines.
2. Next, I laid the fabric out, print sized up to line up how and where I wanted the pattern on the chair.
3. One I had that in place, I cut around the seat a few inches, so that there was plenty of fabric to fold and secure under the seat.
4. Then I turned the fabric over, print side down and positioned the seat for stapling.
5. I started stapling the fabric to the seat, starting with the longest, straightest side.
6. I then moved to the opposite side, securing the fabric with staples.
7. I finished the other two sides.
8. Lastly, I secured the corners with pleats, grabbing the middle, pulling straight, then folding two pieces over and stapling.
9. Once complete, you can cut off excess fabric and re-secure the seat to the chair, and you’re done!

I love how the seat turned out and what an amazing transformation it was in just a few minutes! Really, the project start to finish probably only took me 30 minutes. And now I have a fun new chair that will likely take residence in my office/craft room. Here are a few pictures of the completed beauty…

Isn’t she fun? I’m really happy with how it turned out – AND with how fabulous that fabric is! So very easy to work with, great colors, great quality! And I love that the pre-cut size was PERFECT for what I needed and really made this project a breeze. I’m not sure how many more years would have gone by before I reupholstered this chair if it wasn’t for Michaels Fabrics!
