Hi friends! I know, I know, it’s not even Halloween yet, but in the craft and decor world I have already moved on to our next holidays! That’s right, Thanksgiving and Christmas are next on the docket, so it’s time to get to creating! Right now it’s looking like Thanksgiving will be at our house this year, so I’ve already starting thinking about our tablescape and wanted to create some festive Thanksgiving place settings, thus this Painted Burlap Thanksgiving Place Settings project! I love using different and unique things to hold dinnerware. Over the Summer I popped flatware into a turquoise mason jar and last Easter I used these adorable burlap bags that I had snagged from Pick Your Plum. Well I loved that look so much, that I was thinking of doing it again for Thanksgiving – with a twist.
Now I’ve used NEW Americana Multi-Surface Satins by DecoArt on a number of different projects since it arrived on the market: Stenciled Painted Clipboards, Halloween Favor Bags, our Spooky Spider Wreath and Candy Corn Favor Bags! The paint can really be used just about anywhere, which makes it perfect for projects like these. I knew that a little bit of paint would add some festive color to our burlap bags!
What you’ll need:
- Americana Multi-Surface Satins (I used paprika and dark scarlet)
- Burlap bags (I picked up from Pick Your Plum)
- Cardboard
- Paint brush
- Painter’s tape
And the steps:
- Slip a piece of cardboard into your burlap bag so that the paint does not bleed through to the other side.
- Mark off a bottom section of the bag with painter’s tape and paint with Americana Multi-Surface Satins.
- Remove that painter’s tape and mark off another section of the bag with another strip of painter’s tape.
- Paint the middle section with another color of Americana Multi-Surface Satins.
- Pull the cardboard out while somewhat wet (to avoid sticking to the bag), and allow to dry.
Add a napkin and your flatware, and the resulting Painted Burlap Thanksgiving Place Settings are fun and festive!
What do you think? These painted burlap bags are such a fun and easy way to add color, pattern and texture to your Thanksgiving place settings this year. What fun crafts and decor ideas do you have planned? Do you have some painting on your list? If so, don’t forget to pick up your Americana Multi-Surface Satins! They are available for purchase at Michaels, A.C. Moore, Hobby Lobby, and other fine craft retailers. Happy crafting!

I really want to make these. They are adorable! Can you tell me what size the burlap sacks are?
Kelsey says
Can you tell me what you are using on top of the plates under the burlap sacks I love the rustic feel!
Kimberly Sneed says
Hi Kelsey, those were bamboo plates I also found at World Market. I don’t think they carry them anymore (which is a bummer!), but you could check somewhere like Amazon! Hope that helps. 🙂
