Hi friends! Earlier this month I shared about our new adventure: potty training our 2-year old, Alex. It’s been, well, interesting. He definitely was “ready” for it, but since we started him so much earlier than we did with AJ, our 4-year old, the experience is definitely different. So I wanted to give a quick update on how things were going and how we’re going about it all…
The Good
So let’s start with the good. Alex LOVES the Pull-Ups Big Kid App (download from iTunes or Android). Ok, I know that shouldn’t be shocking, what kid doesn’t love playing on a phone or tablet? But I love the timer so we can set reminders between “potty breaks.” So far, it seems that 2 hours works for us between breaks, but you can tailor it to your child’s needs! I also LOVE that the app has a reward system. Alex earns a star for every successful potty break. I remember I used to bribe AJ with candy (yikes!). I wasn’t so sure that the “star” method would work, but honestly it’s been the most motivating aspect of the whole experience for him! Even AJ asks for a star now, haha! And it’s actually easy, you can set up different child profiles, so I do indulge AJ now and again.
Alex is LOVING the Pull-Ups. I think he likes feeling like a big kid. And now with all the Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University things we’ve been focused on lately, I think he identifies even more with the fun Mike and Sulley Pull-Ups! He loves them, and even AJ still asks to wear them.
The Bad
We started the training over a long weekend because during the week we work and the kids go to daycare. With AJ that long weekend was enough to get him into the habit of things, but I think that’s where age is coming into play. Alex doesn’t want to go potty at daycare, or has to constantly be reminded, which is difficult with multiple children. So for now, we’re trying to get him more in the habit at home and hope it will soon transfer over to other locations.
The Ugly
Well there really isn’t any “ugly” with Huggies Pull-Ups. There have been “accidents” of course, but that’s why Huggies takes the fear out of potty training. We still have discussions about accidents, but clean up is easy!
Since Alex is younger, we’re trying to stay really relaxed this time around. Reward the good and talk about the not-so-good. Huggies Pull-Ups and the Big Kid App are definitely making things easier! Right now I think the keys are #1 Pull-Ups, #2 Patience and #3 Positive Reinforcement! And by “Pull-Ups” I do mean more than just the diaper themselves; if you’re on Facebook or Twitter you really should follow Pull-Ups for useful tips and advice to help you on your potty training journey! Are you potty training your toddler? How are things going for you? What are your tips and tricks?
Pull-Ups helps take the scare out of potty training by making it fun and easy with new Monsters U character training pants! You can help make potty training easier by staying consistent and using rituals like the potty break. Make it a game and ask your toddler, “What does a little monster take?”…“A Potty Break!”

oh man potty training is a beast. i was ready to throw in the towel after a long weekend of cleaning up poop & pee. i realized that ava wasn’t quite as ready as i thought but we kept her in pull ups too, giving her opportunities to use the potty, rewarding her big time when she went. we let her wear underware whenever she asked but mostly she wore the pull ups. and one day she asked to wear underwear and never looked back.
although now she’s started wetting the bed because she doesn’t wake up to go to the bathroom. 🙂 best advice, keep encouraging them and just be patient with them. they will get it.
I totally agree Andrea! With our first we were so stressed, when it wasn’t even the right time for him. I learned that time around that each kid is different, that you show them the way and if it’s the right time, it’ll work out. We’ve been much more relaxed this time around.
I was so stressed out with my first child and the thought of potty training after I heard all my other friend mom’s horror stories. Since my husband and I both work outside of the home I didn’t want our time with our son to be stressful since our time together was short each day. 🙁 We got lucky with wonderful pediatrician and he said boys normally aren’t ready to be potty trained until 3 or 4. I thought it was old but I took his advice. Changing diapers for that long wasn’t fun but when he was ready, he never had an accident during the day or at night. We used the same process with our daughter. Again not fun changing those diapers for 3 years and suffering snickers behind my back by other mom’s. However, she never had an accident once she was truly ready. Just my experience. Wish you much luck!!! I did love Huggies when my kids were in diapers. I also buy my new mom friends Huggies as gifts, they are the best.
Oh I hear you Elizabeth! Our oldest was 3 when it finally “took.” Other people told me it was too old, but I knew he wasn’t ready when we tried sooner. This time around I wasn’t in a hurry, but Alex was showing signs so we’re giving it a try! I figure they know when they’re ready, though I can surely still tell he’s young.
